Root Canals

Root Canals

Save your tooth – and your smile

Root canals are one of the most common dental procedures performed today. Though they have a reputation for being painful, the reality is that with modern advances in dental technology, root canals are usually no more uncomfortable than having a filling placed. And while no one likes to hear that they need a root canal, the truth is that this simple procedure can save your tooth – and your smile.

So what exactly is a root canal? It is a common dental procedure performed when tooth decay has reached the pulp of the tooth, which is the central area of the tooth that contains the nerve tissue and blood vessels. Root canal therapy or root canal treatment is intended to result in the elimination of the existing infection and the protection of the decontaminated tooth from future microbial invasion.

Performing a Root Canal

In order to perform a root canal, your dentist will first numb the area around your tooth. Then, they will create an opening in your tooth so they can access the infected pulp. Once they have removed the pulp, they will clean and disinfect the inside of your tooth before sealing it off. finally, they will place a veneer or crown over your tooth to protect it.

While root canals may have a bad reputation, they are actually quite commonplace and nothing to be afraid of. So if you find yourself in need of one, be sure to see your dentist right away!
